Day Trips
Get out of town!
Let us take you to the best destinations within a day’s drive of Fez. You will love the change of pace, scenery, and culture. Check out our offers and write us for a specialized tour to other places or more than one day.
Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen
The town of Chefchaouen, also known as the Blue City or just Chaouen, is nestled in a beautiful corner of the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco. Three and a half hours of driving will allow you to take in the vast scenery of country living and chat with your driver to get the inside scoop on Moroccan culture, etc.
You will arrive in plenty of time to either procure a guide or find your way to the central square of the old city where there is a Kasbah and several restaurants to choose from.
After lunch, if you don’t have a guide, consider paying the entrance fee to the Kasbah to enjoy the garden, enter the dungeon, and climb the tower lookout. Several plaques will give an interesting historical perspective. After a short visit in the Kasbah you should have plenty of time to roam the medina. Take lots of pictures and check out the quaint shops!
Meet back with your driver at about 3:00 pm to arrive in Fez between 6:30-7:00 pm.

Ifrane - Azrou
Ifrane - Azrou
Sit back and enjoy the ride out of the bustle of Fez and into the middle Atlas mountains. Your first stop is the Berber (Amazigh) town of Imouzzer, which is about a 45-minute drive.Â
The word “Ifrane” in the Berber language of Tamazight means cave. For many years some of the inhabitants of this region have used caves in the side of the hills for their lodging. Your driver will take you to see one such dwelling on your way through town.
Continuing through the mountains for another thirty minutes, you will arrive in Ifrane. Among the attractions are picturesque natural springs, quaint architecture that has earned the town the name of “Little Switzerland,” and a curious carving of a lion that everyone must get their picture taken with. The challenge is to get the true story of who are why the lion was carved. Take your pick of restaurants and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Your next stop is the Berber village of Azrou. It is known for verdant orchards and their boast of the oldest tree in Morocco, the “Cèdre Gourand.” At this spot you can also observe and feed (at your own risk) the Barbary Apes. Horseback riding is also offered there as well as several boutiques selling fossils, gems, and other treasures from the Atlas Mountains.
You will hate to leave so soon, but there is about an hour and a half drive back to Fez.Â

The old city of Fez is around 1,200 years old, but this day trip will take you to preserved landmarks from over 2,000 years ago!
This is a beautiful drive into the foothills of the Rif mountains. You will pass rolling hills where people are hard at work with their mules and plows in the fields. Sporadic villages line the road with stork nests adorning power poles and mosques.Â
The vast, fertile plain that suddenly opens before you is a reminder why the Romans settled here. The entrance fee is presently 70 dirhams per person. Guides are available at the gate. A quick tour would last two hours. This is a fabulous spot for portraits with striking backgrounds.
Plan to have lunch at one of the market cafés of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the village on twin hills within view of Volubilis. Afterwards you may want to roam the village to see the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I (his son was the founder of Fez), a panoramic overlook of the village, and the “only round minaret in all of Morocco.”
A couple of hours there will suffice before heading back to Fez. You will leave with the feeling that you’d love to repeat this trip another time. Marhaba!
Tips for your tour
- Wear sturdy walking shoes since the ground at each location can be rough at times.
- Take a hat or umbrella to shade from the sun, especially at Volubilis where there are no shaded areas on the archaeological site.
- Familiarize yourself with the history of your destination for more enjoyment.
- Your driver can show you where there are restrooms along the way, but you might want to give some advanced notice.
- Feel free to ask your driver questions about the geography, culture, etc.
- Don't forget to take lots of pictures!
